While most people run away from danger, volunteer firefighters run towards it. These selfless individuals are the backbone of emergency response in many rural communities across South Dakota and the nation.

Though they undertake extensive training and risk their lives to serve others, they do it all without pay and while balancing full-time jobs and families. It's a calling that requires major dedication, sacrifice, and resources.

Recently, South Dakota provided $5 million in grants specifically for volunteer fire departments to help ease their financial burden. This funding will provide essential equipment and training to allow volunteers to do their jobs more safely and effectively.

Things like updated protective gear, upgraded tools and technology, and advanced training are expensive but vital. They can make the difference between life and death when battling a dangerous fire or responding to a medical emergency.

For many small towns, volunteer firefighters are the only emergency responders available. They are always on call to help their neighbors in need, no matter the time of day or situation. That's why supporting these local heroes is so important.

The state funding shows a commitment to providing volunteer departments the means to protect their communities. It's an investment that helps ensure public safety and saves lives.

While full-time firefighters are paid for their service, volunteer firefighters sacrifice their time and risk their wellbeing out of a sense of duty to help others. They embody an spirit of community, courage and selflessness that deserves both gratitude and support.

The next time you see your local volunteer fire department responding to an emergency, thank them for their invaluable service. And know that they have the backing of their state and community, with resources to continue their lifesaving work.

These everyday heroes help make South Dakota a safer place to call home.
