Nearly 3 Million New Yorkers to Receive STAR Tax Relief — Is Your Check Coming Soon?
New York’s STAR program is delivering major tax relief this year, $2.2 billion in total, with nearly 3 million homeowners set to benefit.
The School Tax Relief (STAR) program, designed to ease the cost of school property taxes, is now in its second phase of distribution, with payments being rolled out across the state.
Who Got Paid in Phase 1?
Phase 1 of the program covered homeowners with school tax due dates in June and July.
Those recipients have already received their STAR savings — either through a reduction on their tax bill or by mail as a refund check.

Phase 2 Is Happening Now
If your school taxes are due in August, September, or October, you’re likely in Phase 2 — and your STAR benefit is either already processed or on the way.
According to state officials, over 320,000 Western New York residents are included in this round.
STAR Payment Amounts & What to Expect
Your benefit amount depends on your eligibility category:
-
Basic STAR (Homeowners): $350–$600
-
Enhanced STAR (Seniors): $700–$1,500
Exact figures vary based on local tax rates and your specific STAR enrollment.

When Will You Get It?
The timing of your STAR benefit depends on your local school district’s tax due date.
That’s why payments are being distributed on a rolling basis throughout the fall.
You’ll either:
-
Receive a check by mail, or
-
See the benefit applied directly to your property tax bill
