How to Get FEMA Help If Texas Floods Damaged Your Home or Finances

Severe flooding in Texas has left many families facing damage to homes, vehicles, and essential belongings.

To help Texans recover, the federal government has activated FEMA disaster assistance for affected counties, including Harris, Galveston, Brazoria, Fort Bend, and Kerr County.

If you or a loved one were impacted, here’s a clear, step-by-step guide to getting the financial aid you may be eligible for.

What Can FEMA Assistance Help Pay For?

FEMA can help cover:

  • Temporary housing if your home is unsafe

  • Repairs for flood-damaged homes

  • Replacement of essential personal items

  • Disaster-related medical, dental, or funeral costs

  • Disaster unemployment assistance and legal services

Note: FEMA does not replace insurance but can help with uncovered essential expenses.

If you’re unsure about what assistance you qualify for, take a look here.

Step 1: Document Your Flood Losses

  1. Take clear photos and videos of damaged areas
  2. List all damaged or lost items
  3. Save receipts for emergency repairs or purchases

Documenting your losses will make your application smoother.

Step 2: Apply for FEMA Assistance

You can apply in three ways:

  1. Online: DisasterAssistance.gov
  2. By Phone: Call 1-800-621-3362 (FEMA), available 7 AM to 10 PM CST
  3. FEMA Mobile App: Available on iOS and Android

Have these details ready:

  • Your Social Security number

  • The address of your damaged home

  • A description of the damage

  • Insurance details if you have coverage

  • A phone number where you can be reached

Step 3: Prepare for a FEMA Inspection

FEMA may schedule an inspection to verify damages.

Make sure you are available or appoint someone you trust to meet the inspector.

Some inspections may be done remotely using photos or video calls.

Step 4: Track Your Application Status

You can check your application progress online or through the FEMA app. If your application is approved:

  1. You will receive a notification with the approved assistance amount
  2. Funds will typically be sent via direct deposit for faster access

Additional Support Options

Beyond Individual Assistance:

  • Public Assistance: Helps repair public infrastructure and emergency services in affected areas.

  • SBA Disaster Loans: Homeowners, renters, and small businesses may qualify for low-interest disaster loans to aid recovery.

Who Can Get FEMA Assistance?

You may qualify for FEMA assistance if:

  1. You are a U.S. citizen or legal resident
  2. Your main home is in a declared disaster area
  3. You suffered direct flood damage

Apply Quickly as Deadlines Matter!

Most FEMA applications must be completed within 60 days of the disaster declaration (July 6, 2025).

Applying promptly helps avoid delays in receiving aid.
