Social Security COLA 2026 Announcement: What Retirees Need to Know

Social Security beneficiaries are waiting to see how much their monthly payments will increase next year.

The Cost of Living Adjustment (COLA) is designed to help retirees, people with disabilities, and survivors keep up with rising prices and maintain purchasing power.

When Will the 2026 COLA Be Announced?

The Social Security Administration (SSA) is expected to officially announce the 2026 COLA on October 10, 2025.

This announcement will confirm the percentage increase and give beneficiaries a clear picture of what to expect in their payments.

How Is COLA Calculated?

COLA is based on inflation data measured during the third quarter of the year (July to September).

The adjustment ensures that Social Security payments reflect the cost increases in everyday expenses, from groceries to utilities.

2026 COLA Projections

Early projections indicate a 2.7% increase for 2026:

  • Slightly higher than the 2.5% adjustment in 2025

  • Lower than the 8.7% COLA in 2023 during high inflation

For the average retired worker, a 2.7% increase would mean about $54 more per month, providing extra support to cover rising living costs.
